The Snow Child

This was a final assignment in my Illustration 1 class. We were required to choose a story and design 3 characters from it, as well as create an environment that fit the characters.

I chose the novel "The Snow Child" by Eowyn Ivey. You can read the synopsis here.

Anyway, here is my interpretation. Goodbye winter, hellooooo summer :)

A Passionate Person

This is a very long overdue post of a project I finished earlier this semester. The assignment was to create a pen & ink composition around someone we knew and their greatest passion - I chose to illustrate my very passionate roommate, Lauren. Her dream is to become a sailor and captain her own boat one day. Here it is!

Pen & Ink Dump

At school we're really encouraged to push ourselves with pen & ink. Something to do with building confidence and developing line work... SO, that's what I've been practicing. These are just a few sketches from this past week. More posts soon!

Stop the Slaughter.

Hey all, so we were assigned a project in Illustration 1 to create a piece of sequential art - either an editorial, biographical or historical event, or political illustration.

I chose to center my project around the dolphin slaughter that happens in Taiji, Japan every year around the month of September. Every year, around 22,000 dolphins are killed in a small cove off of the coast of Taiji. Dolphin meat is not edible because of its high mercury content, but the some of the meat is secretly packaged and sent off to schools and grocery stores under the guise of other types of seafood. The rest of the meat is senselessly thrown away, while any live dolphins that are deemed worthy are sold into dolphinariums.

When I first heard about this, I was working at a theme park where dolphins performed. It was like being slapped in the face with something that should have been obvious, especially since I'd been so close to the issue for so long. The story has kind of stuck with me ever since, so here you have it - a very depressing dolphin tale.

If you'd like the know more, the Academy Award winning documentary "The Cove" explores this topic in great detail - it's very well made, I highly recommend it.

OKAY, enough jabbering about animal/human rights. Here's the comic page! (+ a little bit of lens distortion)

Viva Italia!

So I'm finally posting a few of my paintings from Italy - while I was there I did around 30 or so plein air paintings. I've given some away, and others - well, they suck. These are a few decent ones that didn't end up as gifts that I'll be putting up for sale in a gallery show at the beginning of next month. If you're in San Francisco around March 1 and would like to take a look, stop by The Cannery Gallery! I promise they look way better and less distorted in person >_<

I Don't Wanna Grow Up.

Just a little exercise from my Illustration 1 class. We had to redesign a boring room, but still keep it recognizable. I made mine in to Peter Pan's bedroom. Inaccurate perspective ftw!

Hipster Tigers That Sled Recreationally.

So, I was recently asked by my good friend Dan of the band Sledding With Tigers to create some cover art for a cassette tape compendium. This was so incredibly hipster that I decided it was appropriate for the mascot (a tiger, obviously) to be sitting in a vintage chair, smoking a pipe - something very commonly used by hipsters who find cigarettes distasteful and mainstream. And here it is! A slightly hipster tiger showing his support for this awesome band:

And here's the original sketch:

more sketches & paintings coming soon!

Adorable Owl Adventures

This project took entirely too long, but it's finally complete! The assignment was a 2 page comic, showcasing as many different types of perspective as possible in an a well-designed way. The story is a little weak and I should probably add some dialogue, but for time-saving purposes this will be the final that I turn in - maybe I'll color it over the break? Anyway, here it is!

A One-Point Floating Monastery

This is my floating monastery in one-point perspective... I wish it was real and I could train my mind to float my body & my home above the mountains - maybe then I wouldn't have to pay rent! Alas, it only exists in my imagination, and now in my drawings - Illustration is so magical. Yay!
