Stop the Slaughter.

Hey all, so we were assigned a project in Illustration 1 to create a piece of sequential art - either an editorial, biographical or historical event, or political illustration.

I chose to center my project around the dolphin slaughter that happens in Taiji, Japan every year around the month of September. Every year, around 22,000 dolphins are killed in a small cove off of the coast of Taiji. Dolphin meat is not edible because of its high mercury content, but the some of the meat is secretly packaged and sent off to schools and grocery stores under the guise of other types of seafood. The rest of the meat is senselessly thrown away, while any live dolphins that are deemed worthy are sold into dolphinariums.

When I first heard about this, I was working at a theme park where dolphins performed. It was like being slapped in the face with something that should have been obvious, especially since I'd been so close to the issue for so long. The story has kind of stuck with me ever since, so here you have it - a very depressing dolphin tale.

If you'd like the know more, the Academy Award winning documentary "The Cove" explores this topic in great detail - it's very well made, I highly recommend it.

OKAY, enough jabbering about animal/human rights. Here's the comic page! (+ a little bit of lens distortion)

I saw the cove and man what a heart break indeed. This is a really well made editorial. Good job in such a huge subject and terrible issue. See you around Canada.:)
